Laura ZABO - Fashion from old Tyres

I found Laura ZABO whilst looking for quirky material for the REBEL issue. I wanted to find a person, business or brand that was doing something unusual or challenging the norm. I found this in Laura. A self confessed ‘tough woman’ Laura up-cycles tyres and creates fashion. Yep, that’s very, very cool.

A two-month stint in Tanzania was life changing. Like so many of us with a curious mind and an adventurous spirit, we have a ‘moment’ and Laura’s moment came in the local Maasai market. There she found some brightly painted sandals and fell in love. Fell in love with the sandals, yet more importantly fell in love with the idea of producing her own products made from the same material – old tyres.

Old tyres are destined for landfill where they sit and poison the earth. Every year more than 1.5 billion scrap tyres are produced with only a small percentage of them, recycled. Laura’s mission is to change that.

There are many different ways to reuse tyre rubber and create useful items and we should put lot of effort to reduce this waste. Car tyres are great for shoe soles, and furniture. Bicycle tyres can reborn as belts, dog accessories and inner tubes are also useful for many fashionable purposes. So why not to reuse them and offer unique, handmade and sustainable products?
